iOS 6 Auto Wifi 3G Switch: Stay Synced With Weak Wifi Or 3G Connection
The iOS 6 in its latest beta version is bundled with a new “Wi-Fi Plus Cellular” switch available right inside the iOS Settings. This new Wifi switch, if enabled, modifies the default iOS behavior, which at present is to swap to an acknowledged Wi-Fi network from 3G, regardless of Wi-Fi connection quality.
However, with the Wifi Plus toggle the iPhone or iPad will automatically identify the quality of Wi-Fi networks that depends on signal strength, speed and more, and jumps to 3G whenever the quality is not good enough. According to the official Apple description for this Wifi Plus, Cellur -the feature “Allow applications experiencing difficulty on WiFi to utilize 3G network.”
However, as the attribute can put some strain on your monthly data bill, Apple has restricted the feature to be only few iOS app. The allowed apps and service that can access the auto switch feature will still require manual enabling or disabling. For the rest of the apps and games possibly, the WiFi to 3G auto switch will be just as on iOS 5.x.
The number of services that can use the new toggle includes:
- iCloud Documents
- iTunes
- FaceTime
- Passbook updates
- Reading List.
Because of this all the above-mentioned services would be in sync regardless of whether WiFi is temporarily down, flawlessly moving over and returning to WiFi when connection gets recovered.
