How To Install Android 2.2 Froyo On HTC Desire?(Unofficial)

Today we bring the possibility of unofficial Android 2.2 Froyo update for HTC Desire, million thanks to udK_dev.! Although unofficial, it works remarkably well without any major issues. The HTC Desire has proved to be one of HTC’s most popular Android phones. But the only problem with the Desire at the moment is that it’s still running Android 2.1 (Eclair), as opposed to Android 2.2 (Froyo), although HTC have said that Desire, Legend and Wildfire users can expect Froyo rollouts by Q3 2010.

A member over at xda-developers, named udK, has managed to port Android 2.2 over to the Desire for all to enjoy. The ROM is based on FRF-85B, not the more recently released FRF-91, although as there are very few differences between these two builds (my update package was less than 2MB from FRF-50), so upgrading in that aspect shouldn’t be a problem. In addition to the updated operating system, it also requires an updated radio image for Froyo to work properly. So what are the added benefits?

  • Wi-Fi Hotspot

With the ROM installed, you will be able to turn your Desire in to a mobile wifi hotspot, what else you want.

  • Native Apps2SD

Apps2SD is probably one of the most wanted features on many Google Android devices right now. After all, the Market is growing at a staggering rate, fast catching up with the App Store and storming ahead of competition such as the webOS store. With native Apps2SD compatibility, users can utilise their cheap micro SD memory cards in the Desire, and install an abundance of applications to it, not having to worry about storage limitations of the phone. Admittedly, this could be accomplished already if your phone is rooted (which it has to be to install the custom ROM), but to have it built in to the OS is a great time saver, and a really neat feature to have for many users.

  • 720p Video Recording

It brings the ability to record 720p video from the Desire’s camera, which can’t currently be done with HTC’s ROM. A similar addition has been made in the Cyanogen ROM’s for the Nexus One, so it’s great to see this feature make it’s way over to the Desire. It’s interesting that HTC haven’t added this functionality to their ROM on the Desire yet, as the hardware is clearly capable of capturing 720p content without any extra physical changes being made.

How to flash DJDroid v1.0-R1 BETA:

The installation procedure of this Rom requires 2 steps:

  1. Rom installation
  2. Radio installation

  • Rooted phone
  • Koush Fakeflash installed on SD (see here)

Step 1 – Rom Installation

  • a. Enter recovery (press volume down then – keeping it pressed – press power button) and make all the WIPES available, with the procedure you like the most.
  • b. After WIPES have been done, use Fakeflash to install ROM file on your SD card.

After installation procedure is over, reboot your phone (first reboot will take some time to complete, do nothing meanwhile).
After first boot, complete first time phone configuration skipping all unnecessary steps (like network, accounts and the like – you will have time setup everything later on).
Shut down the phone.

Step 2 – Radio Installation

  • Switch on the phone entering recovery (again, volume down + power)
  • Use fakeflash to make all wipes available, and when you are done, install file on sd card: The install will be blazingly fast (less than 3 seconds).
  • Using back button, go to main menu and reboot your phone.

At this point, slowly and gently lean your phone on a flat surface (an altar would be an excellent choice) and start praying (it always helps….), while imagining our grinning faces……
Your device will execute several operations, and reboot more than once.
If you find yourself alone, riding in the green fields with the sun on your face, and you phone boots into Sense, do not be troubled. For you are in Elysium, and you’re already done with the installation!
On the other side, if you find yourself alone, and also twelve sexyually aroused virgins appear around you, do not be trubled. For you didn’t follow the procedure and your phone is already dead….
At this point, you can follow the normal setup procedure as you wish.

There are not wallpapers

Sometimes the geo-localization could not work well

It’s possible that some times the device reboot for unknown reasons
