If your iTunes ask you to have the latest firmware before you can install any new app then there is a hack to bypass the requirement.

Apple has released the new iPhone OS 3.1.3 for iPhone and iPod touch which upgraded the baseband to 05.12.01. The new baseband for iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS makes unlocking impossible so the better idea is to fake your firmware to iPhone 3.1.3. The process will not effect your current baseband or unlock status as it only changes the version number from iPhone 3.1.2 to iPhone 3.1.3.

Here are the steps involved:

1. A jailbroken iPhone with firmware 3.1.2 is required to achieve the hack.
2. Install the app called “Fake 3.1.3″ from Cydia on http://cy.sosiphone.com/ repository. First you need to have http://cy.sosiphone.com/ repo in Cydia.
3. Restart your iPhone
4. After reboot, go to Setting>>General>>About. You will find “3.1.3 (7E18)” entered alongside “Version”.
